REUGE

Today, Reuge is the only true master of mechanical music; an Art that Reuge has resolutely guided into the 21st century.
When the mp3 player was developed, passion for luxury mechanical objects remained intact and endured. Ultimately, it was modern design that was to be the source of their renewed lease on life. The philosophy of Reuge can be summarized in a few words: tradition – quality – exclusivity – modernity – creativity Reuge’s ambitious challenge is to thrust the music box back into the spotlight with luxurious and exclusive musical gifts.

Reuge musical movements benefit from the priceless heritage of music makers. They are still manufactured today in accordance with an art dating back centuries. An infinite wealth of tunes, absolute machining precision and exceptionally finely finished parts – these are the hallmarks of Reuge musical movements from the 5,000 pins of a Cartel Inter movement cylinder with bells to the blued steel screws used to fix a 36-note comb. With four tunes per cylinder, the Cartel movement is to mechanical music what the tourbillon is to watchmaking.

A Reuge music box takes about three months to produce (more for special designs and/or complicated movements), during which our craftsmen breathe life and soul into their creations in every step of the creative process. The mastery of many professional skills, some of which are highly specialised for the fabrication of musical boxes, is necessary to produce one of these fine creations. Unique expertise is indeed the secret of mechanical music.

Reuge – Racing Symphony

  • Description
  • Technical Specifications

Calling for speed, the modern REUGE chassis strikes with dynamic curves and its sharp design. Made entirely of aluminium, the chassis is sprayed with vivid color by a coachbuilder just like on race cars. The vibrant green is a piece unique 1/1 made exclusively for ART in TIME

To look like a real sports car, REUGE applies two independent symmetric movements in an automaton, inspired by the 16-cylinder powerhouse of the Auto Union series from the 1930s. The air inlet on each side of the sports car hosts another moving part, the flying wheels. Their mission this time is not to cool the engine, but to regulate the rotation of each cylinder for the right music speed. Being a mechanical automaton, the energy required to operate the movements is manually generated with a carbon-coated steel winding key. The two independent movements have two barrels situated in the cockpit and their mainsprings can be wound up with the key through the two exhaust pipes. Are you ready for a musical ride ?

  • Description
  • Technical Specifications

When birds sing, it’s like a flying-visit to heaven; they take ahold of our soul and transport us. Those who listen are reminded of their connection to nature and called back to the beauty of the present moment. There is an unspeakable emotion in a birdsong. REUGE’s latest collection of Tabatières named “Enchanting Birds” features a bird automaton and its magical tune in a larger than life creation.

Upon activation of a lever, the colorful animal pops out of the automaton where it was hidden from view under an oval cover. The bird consists in no less than 250 mechanical pieces at work, all assembled by hand in the brand’s atelier in Sainte-Croix. It flaps its wings and moves every joint of its small body in unison with an enchanting tune. The spectacle is so accurate that it almost seems like a real bird. The new collection of Tabatières attest to REUGE’s ability to observe and draw inspiration from the nature surrounding it. The automaton’s uncanny realism is a testimony to the brand’s ingenuity and know-how. The complexity behind the movement is the key to uniqueness.

Reuge – Slightly Windy

  • Description
  • Technical Specifications

Harmony with nature lies at the heart of the REUGE philosophy. Through its quest for noble materials and fine wood, the brand has proven time and again that its work is anchored in the respect for the beautiful surroundings of the Jura region in Switzerland. Slightly windy was conceived in this mindset. REUGE selected twelve stems of wheat in the nearby fields of Sainte-Croix, preserved and solidified them through a specific treatment so that they would become a permanent spectacle. The musical mechanism is linked to an automaton that agitates the wheat stems just so, reproducing their organic sway in real nature. Slightly windy is a mesmerizing show of sound and motion.

Reuge – Miliarius

  • Description
  • Technical Specifications

In the Ancient Roman Empire, legendary chariot races took place in the Circus Maximus Arena applauded by 300,000 spectators including the great emperor Julius Caesar himself. This is where fearless slaves risked their lives in ferocious struggles to seize a victory and gain their freedom. Miliarius was the finest of them all, the charioteer with a thousand victories. He was revered by both the public and the elite for his courage, which inspired REUGE to dedicate his name to a unique mechanical artistry.

Every single element of the Miliarius, whether technical or decorative, was made entirely by hand by the craftsmen of the REUGE Manufacture in Sainte-Croix with outstanding quality and artisan expertise.

The race starts and bets are cast among the viewers but no one knows its outcome yet because a different horse wins each time. The mechanism of this automaton took months to conceive and develop within the REUGE atelier of Sainte-Croix. It encloses more than 2’200 components which interact flawlessly together, bringing the automaton to life.

Miliarius embodies REUGE’s creativity and know-how. The automaton brings an epic battle back to life; the music consecrates the scenery. Behind the Brand’s mystical quest for an organic sound and a creative motion, lies a desire to transcend an experience. Music and movement engage senses: when played right, when timed just so, they have the power to take us back in time so that we relive emotions we thought were hidden.
