Bovet 1822

The House of BOVET
The year 2006 was filled with positive developments for BOVET 1822. Within a few months, Pascal Raffy successively added BOVET 1822 Manufacture de Cadrans, DIMIER 1738 Manufacture de Haute Horlogerie, as well as the Château de Môtiers to the House of BOVET.
These acquisitions ensured the complete independence of the House and positioned it to raise its quality standards even further. Collectors, specialists, and keen observers of the watch industry have ever since saluted the technical advancements introduced by BOVET, while remaining in complete harmony with the tradition of watchmaking arts that have made the House so successful for almost two centuries.

Historical Monument
The 5,800 square-metre Château de Môtiers is a listed historical monument affording exceptional views over the landscapes of the Val-de-Travers, including BOVET’s birthplace in the village of Fleurier. In 2006, the Neuchâtel state authorities were looking to sell this castle of which the upkeep was proving too expensive. Mr. Pascal Raffy was the only potential buyer in a position to ensure the long-term preservation of this unique heritage site so fondly cherished by the people of the Canton. He was thus able to acquire the Château de Môtiers, and in doing so to fulfil his dream of offering BOVET the opportunity of returning to its birthplace. An idyllic setting, it is no mere coincidence that Fleurier and the Val-de-Travers experienced the early 19th century boom in watchmaking activity that was to ensure the region’s prosperity for almost two centuries.

Historical Monument
The House of BOVET quickly became a reference in terms of the decorative arts. Indeed the Emperor of China was one of the earliest collectors, and today many BOVET timepieces remain part of the priceless heritage of the Forbidden City. The business activities of the House of BOVET had their beginnings in China with Edouard Bovet. At that time, they had the clear-sightedness to craft timepieces specifically for the Middle Empire, the fame of the “Bovets of China”, as they were then called, spread rapidly to other continents. The popularity enjoyed by Edouard Bovet and the legitimate place, which his creations now occupy in museums around the world.

Bovet 1822 – Amadeo Fleurier “Metiers d’Art”

  • Description
  • Technical Specifications

The creation presented by Bovet 1822 meets the highest watchmaking standards dear to the ART IN TIME gallery. This piece – the only one of its kind – is housed in the iconic Amadeo case developed by Bovet 1822. This unique and patented system means that the watch can be converted into a wristwatch, a pocket watch, or even a miniature table clock in an instant, with no tools required. The 43-millimetre 18-carat rose gold case is hand-engraved throughout, as is the clasp located at twelve o’clock. The pattern chosen for this piece is known as the ‘fleurisanne’ engraving, a distinctive style closely associated with Val-de-Travers, the home of the Bovet 1822 firm: a rare decoration, inspired by nature, sculpted entirely by hand in a piece of solid red gold.

The dial of the unique piece depicts a standing horse, finely apparelled in parade dress. The equestrian theme is no accident: the horse is a Barb, a breed highly reputed for its faithfulness and loyalty. The dial is hand-painted, then lacquered using a traditional Chinese technique adapted by Bovet 1822 craftsmen to the specific dictates of the pattern and the dial. Immortalising the noble steed in such a lifelike fashion is a painstaking task, requiring some one hundred hours of concentration. Several parts of the tack, including the horse’s saddle, stirrups, and harness, are highlighted in gold leaf. This arduous decorative undertaking calls for total commitment on the part of the manufacture’s craftsmen. The embellishments on some components take over twenty times as long as the part itself to complete.

Bovet 1822 – Virtuoso V

  • Description
  • Technical Specifications

The Virtuoso V integrates two complications that are difficult to combine: jumping hours and retrograde minutes. The jump of the hour disk must be perfectly synchronized with the jump of the minute hand. A power reserve indicator completes the indications by displaying a remarkable autonomy of five days with a single barrel. To add to the timepiece’s functions, the watchmakers developed a corrector that is independent of the hour disk. It allows the Virtuoso V to display a different time zone on each side of the timepiece.

The Virtuoso V features the patented Amadéo® convertible case, which allows it to be transformed into a reversible wristwatch, a table clock, or a pocket watch, without the need for a single tool. As a result, hours and minutes can be found on both sides of the movement.

Bovet 1822 – Miss Audrey Sweet Art

  • Description
  • Technical Specifications

Born in the mind and heart of Mr. Pascal Raffy, the owner of the House of BOVET for 20 years this year, the Miss Audrey Sweet Art takes this material and transforms it – all with the goal of capturing the sweetness of love and the purity of a child’s carefree desire for confections. The process of producing this dial is extraordinarily complex. First, the pure sugar crystals are prepared so their structure will not change when exposed to light or heat (no the sugar crystals will not melt). Then the sweet crystals are chosen for size, then combined with special paints and hand-applied to the dial by one of BOVET’s miniature painting artisans. This demanding process, protected by a patent, leaves no room for error. One misstep and the entire process has to start again.

Thanks to its artisanal and hand-made nature, each and every dial is in effect a piece unique. A variety of colors are available, including solid hues as well as gradients. The result is an intriguing mix of texture and sparkle, unlike any other dial ever produced in the watchmaking industry. The special hands of the dial of the Sweet Art are a whimsical, romantic touch. Uniquely shaped, they form a beautiful heart once every hour, as the minute hand catches up to the hour hand, reminding the wearers of the loved ones in their lives.

Keen to develop useful complications that would allow everyday use of the timepiece, Mr. Raffy — BOVET 1822’s Owner —sought to incorporate a push button into the cabochon of the crown so as to be able to adjust the moon
